Humble is not a thing anyone wishes to be yet some get there just in how they perceive themselves. If you strive to be humble for bragging rights then you have not moved an inch from where you were. Humble is truly what humble does and it isn’t teachable other than through spiritual growth or standing tall as a poor man or woman. Flipping off the world is not humble.

To my mind, humble, or humility, means understanding that once born we are a corpse walking. Sound harsh? Probably because you are in denial of your weakness. It is those who want to live forever and actually listen to their own nonsense (or bank account!) who will not be humbled. They can say they are and, hell, they can say most anything and often do.

Humility is recognizing a lack of permanence. We find this out at funerals of loved ones, in war, in places unexpected and events not looked for. It seeks us out and pounces when we are feeling impervious. Once taught it is rarely forgotten. It should be sought out before it has to come and teach. A lesson learned is often enough. Sometimes, and depending on the individual, it has to come to them again and again. Until, that is, the ultimate “inevitable” takes place. One can only hope that we learn before then.
